The Harris County School District Transportation Department recently attended the annual Georgia Association of Pupil Transportation (GAPT) Summer Conference, held June 15–18 in Jekyll Island, Georgia. Representing the district were Carol Taylor, Field Trip Secretary; Paul Bowden, Transportation Supervisor; and Thomas Vowell, Director of Transportation.
This conference provides valuable opportunities for transportation professionals across Georgia to stay current on regulations, participate in professional development workshops, network with peers facing similar challenges, strengthen leadership skills, and explore the latest equipment and technology available in pupil transportation.
Throughout the week, attendees participated in workshops covering a wide range of topics, including routing, fleet maintenance, budgeting, emergency preparedness, leadership development, and more. Many sessions were led by state transportation officials and experienced transportation leaders, offering firsthand insights into industry best practices and emerging trends. The training supports professional growth and helps participants prepare for advanced transportation certifications.
Director Thomas Vowell is especially excited about the Southeastern Pupil Transportation College (SPTC), a recently established program that offers transportation leaders and aspiring leaders the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Arts Pupil Transportation Official Degree through 90 hours of rigorous coursework. The program covers all aspects of pupil transportation and can take up to four years to complete.
“Carol Taylor and I began the program last month, and it has already provided us with a wealth of knowledge from many perspectives across transportation,” said Vowell. “My goal is for Harris County School District to be among the first to complete the program and to encourage more of our staff to become involved. This investment will help ensure our transportation team remains knowledgeable and prepared to serve our students for years to come.”
The GAPT Summer Conference continues to be an important resource for school transportation professionals, providing training, updates on laws and safety requirements, networking opportunities, and exposure to innovative equipment and technology. The knowledge gained helps transportation departments improve operations, maintain compliance, and uphold the highest standards of safety and service for students.

🔨🎓 Building Futures: Harris County Students Sign with Brasfield & Gorrie 🎓🔨
This morning, Harris County High School celebrated an incredible milestone as five outstanding students officially signed with Brasfield & Gorrie, one of the nation’s leading privately owned construction companies. Surrounded by family, educators, industry leaders, and community supporters, these students were recognized not only for their technical abilities, but also for their dedication, character, and hard work throughout their time in the Construction and CTAE programs.
Construction Teacher Joshua Tracy spoke proudly about each student’s journey, highlighting the growth, perseverance, and leadership they have demonstrated inside and outside the classroom. From award-winning SkillsUSA competitors to students overcoming personal challenges and excelling in their craft, each signee represents the very best of Harris County.
The students recognized included:
🔹 Kortney Brown – A three-time regional masonry champion and now the program’s second full-time Brasfield & Gorrie employee.
🔹 Lindsey Hare – A standout carpentry competitor and state-level SkillsUSA finisher.
🔹 Coleton Lehman – Recognized for his dependability, work ethic, and commitment to excellence.
🔹 Chase Gresham – Praised for his tremendous personal growth and developing technical skills.
🔹 Jacob Garner – Honored for his perseverance, respectfulness, and determination through adversity.
Representatives from Brasfield & Gorrie shared the importance of investing in workforce development and partnering directly with high school construction programs. With operations across multiple states and billions in annual construction volume, the company emphasized that the future of the industry depends on talented young people willing to learn, lead, and build.
Industry leaders from Associated Builders and Contractors of Georgia also praised Harris County’s construction program as one of the top programs in the state, noting the school’s consistent success in SkillsUSA competitions and workforce preparation.
Today’s ceremony was more than a signing event — it was a celebration of opportunity, mentorship, and the powerful partnerships between education and industry.
Congratulations to all of our signees! Your future is bright, and your community is cheering you on.

“Our students are already engaging with AI as builders, not just users.” — Dean Boyer, HCCMS Computer Science Instructor
In a nine-week course with 50-minute class periods, students learned to design, build, test, and package Python-based game applications using Python 3.13, Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, and Windows 11. But the work did not stop there.
Students also integrated LM Studio, a locally running artificial intelligence engine, directly into their games — allowing the AI to participate in gameplay and application behavior itself.
Dean Boyer explained the significance this way:
> “At a time when schools across the country are still trying to determine how artificial intelligence should fit into classroom instruction, our students are already learning programming logic, application design, computational thinking, debugging, responsible AI use, and software architecture in a hands-on environment.”
Even more impressive, the students themselves were able to explain the process clearly:
> “We used Copilot to help us generate the code and fixes we needed for the game. Then we used LM Studio to connect the game to the AI so it could create random logic and stuff inside the game. After that, we used Copilot again to make it into an executable so you can share it between computers.”
In practical terms, students learned how applications communicate with AI systems by sending information, receiving responses, and using those responses dynamically inside software they created themselves.
This project reflects a powerful shift in education: students are no longer simply learning about AI — they are learning how to build with it.
The achievement aligns strongly with Georgia’s Computer Science Standards and appears highly uncommon for the middle school level, especially within a short nine-week course.
Most importantly, it demonstrates what students can accomplish when they are given real-world tools, high expectations, and opportunities to create meaningful technology.
These students are not just preparing for the future of technology — they are beginning to build within it.

We are proud to recognize these outstanding students for earning their CompTIA Security+ Certification — an incredible achievement in the field of cybersecurity!
CompTIA Security+ is the global benchmark certification that validates the essential skills needed for a successful cybersecurity career. This certification demonstrates the ability to secure networks, devices, and applications while protecting the core principles of cybersecurity known as the “CIA Triad”:
🔐 Confidentiality
🛡️ Integrity
🌐 Availability
What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that Security+ is typically recommended for individuals who already hold a CompTIA Network+ certification and have at least two years of IT experience. Our students are proving that dedication, hard work, and talent can exceed industry expectations!
👏 Please join us in celebrating these students:
⭐ Sophomores (10th Grade)
• Nathan Johnson
• Joshua Atkins
• Joseph Albrecht
⭐ Juniors (11th Grade)
• Chance Kozee
• Michael Duncan
• Brandon James
These students have demonstrated professional-level cybersecurity knowledge and problem-solving skills while still in high school. Their success highlights the bright future of technology and cybersecurity education in our school system!

During the fellowship, Transportation Director Thomas Vowell shared words of gratitude and reflected on the lasting impact school transportation staff have on students. He fondly remembered his own 7th grade bus driver — who is still proudly driving for the Harris County School District today.
Transportation Supervisor Paul Bowden also expressed his appreciation for the transportation team and acknowledged the tremendous impact they have made this year. In addition, he reviewed several important housekeeping reminders as the school year comes to a close, encouraging staff to properly maintain their buses to help ensure longevity and continued safety.
HCSD sincerely appreciates all of our bus drivers and monitors for the care, commitment, and support they provide to students each and every day!
