In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Harris County Multi-Disciplinary Team hosted a community awareness event on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hamilton Square in Hamilton, Georgia. The event brought together local leaders, agencies, and community members under this year’s theme: “Positive Childhoods Start With Us.”

This annual observance is dedicated to raising awareness and fostering collaboration to prevent child abuse and neglect. The initiative emphasizes strengthening families through protective factors, promoting safe environments, and encouraging community-wide support systems that ensure the well-being of children.

The event featured keynote speaker Shelia Baker, Assistant Superintendent of Harris County School District, who delivered a powerful message on the shared responsibility of protecting children. Her remarks highlighted:

  • The role each individual plays in creating safe, supportive environments for children

  • The importance of strong partnerships between schools and the community

  • The need to increase awareness, advocacy, and action to safeguard children’s futures

The event was well attended by local officials and community stakeholders, including:

  • Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Howard, City of Hamilton

  • Mayor Mary Ruth Mullins, City of Pine Mountain

  • Mayor Pro Tem Sheron Cross, City of Shiloh

  • Mayor Michael Harris, City of Waverly Hall

  • Mayor Steve Tramell, City of West Point

  • Derek Pinkney, Director of the Department of Family and Children Services

  • Dr. Justin Finney, Superintendent of Harris County School District

  • Representatives from DFCS, local law enforcement, county leadership, and the school district

The program was organized by Vicki Curry-Williams, HCSD Coordinator of Social Services, in partnership with Derek Pinkney, reinforcing the importance of a collaborative, multi-agency approach to child protection.
