On Thursday, February 5, 2026, Harris County School District’s (HCSD) Pine Ridge Elementary (PRE) earned STEAM recertification from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE), reaffirming the school’s continued commitment to rigorous, standards-driven, interdisciplinary instruction through Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

GaDOE STEAM certification, valid for five years, recognizes schools that implement an integrated curriculum grounded in standards-based instruction, problem-solving, and authentic application of learning. Recertification reflects sustained implementation of the GaDOE STEAM continuum and a school’s ability to maintain high expectations as program requirements evolve over time.

To earn recertification, schools must submit extensive documentation aligned to the state’s STEAM continuum and participate in an on-site review conducted by a GaDOE STEAM certification team. The review includes classroom observations, artifact analysis, and conversations with students and teachers to ensure interdisciplinary instruction is implemented with fidelity across grade levels and content areas. The GaDOE team includes state STEAM leaders and educators representing science, computer science, engineering, fine arts, mathematics, and K–12 education.

“STEAM recertification is not a single event—it is the result of a schoolwide commitment to how we plan, teach, and engage students every day,” said Dr. Erin Miley, HCSD STEAM Coordinator. “Pine Ridge Elementary’s recertification reflects consistent instructional practices across classrooms and grade levels, supported by intentional planning, evidence of student learning, and a strong culture of collaboration.”

Pine Ridge Elementary Principal Donna Crooks emphasized the collective effort behind the achievement.

“This recertification reflects the dedication of our teachers and staff who work collaboratively to design learning experiences that are rigorous, relevant, and connected across content areas,” Crooks said. “Our students benefit daily from instruction that encourages them to think critically, solve problems, and communicate their learning in a variety of ways.”

Assistant Principal Brantley Sawyer added, “The STEAM process strengthens our instructional framework and provides a clear structure for continuous growth. We are proud of the consistency and intentionality our faculty demonstrates in meeting the expectations of the STEAM continuum, and grateful for the support that helps sustain this work.”

With this designation, Pine Ridge Elementary becomes the second elementary school in HCSD to earn STEAM recertification. All four of the district’s elementary schools are currently STEAM certified and will continue to recertify every five years following their initial certification, reflecting the district’s long-term commitment to sustaining high-quality interdisciplinary instruction.
