Students in Mrs. Baird’s ELT at Creekside are making their voices heard after becoming finalists in her class' NPR Student Podcast Challenge through the America 250 initiative. As part of the challenge, students were asked to answer the powerful question: “What does Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness mean to you?” Through research, creativity, and thoughtful discussion, these students transformed their ideas into original podcasts that both educate and inspire listeners.

Throughout the project, students learned every step of podcast production. From creating their own music and researching historical information to writing meaningful conversations and producing polished recordings, each student worked to create a podcast entirely of their own. Students also received support and encouragement from local podcasters Crystal Warr and Matthew Sanchez, who helped answer questions about production, shared the fine details of podcasting, and encouraged students to let their voices be heard while telling their own stories. The challenge encouraged students not only to strengthen their communication and technology skills, but also to reflect on the freedoms and rights that shape America.

These students first competed alongside their classmates in Mrs. Baird's ELT class' podcast competition, where entries were scored using a rubric by four different judges. After being selected as finalists at the school level, their podcasts are now being submitted to the national NPR Student Podcast Challenge as part of the America 250 initiative.

Among the finalists are Amelia and Carolina, who explored what “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” means in their own lives while encouraging listeners to use their freedoms to pursue happiness and success. Their podcast also featured a special interview with the school counselor, Mrs. Chapman, giving listeners additional insight into the importance of the phrase and how it applies to everyday life.

Abbigail and Shiloh connected the phrase to the idea of the American Dream, discussing how freedom and opportunity inspire people to achieve their goals and create a better future. Alongside special guest Mrs. Maddox, their social studies teacher, they encouraged listeners to reflect on how the phrase applies to their own lives and aspirations.

Jovie approached the topic by exploring the history and meaning behind “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” while sharing personal reflections and recognizing historical figures who fought to protect these freedoms. Her patriotic tribute celebrating America’s birthday added a memorable and creative touch to her podcast.

Emrys focused on the modern-day challenges surrounding freedom and individual rights, connecting current issues to lessons from the Revolutionary War, the Constitution, and the amendments. He thoughtfully explained how the phrase applies not only to adults, but also to kids his own age, encouraging listeners to better understand their rights and the importance of America’s founding documents.

Lany took listeners back to July 4, 1776, and broke down the phrase in a way that was easy to understand while adding her own thoughtful perspective. She explored how the meaning of the phrase has evolved over time, highlighted people who fought for equal rights and freedoms, and encouraged listeners to use these ideals as motivation to build the future they desire.

Mrs. Baird shared how proud she is of her students for taking on such a meaningful challenge and using their voices to educate others. Through the NPR Student Podcast Challenge and the America 250 theme, Creekside students demonstrated not only creativity and technical skill, but also a deep understanding of American freedoms and the importance of preserving them for future generations.

These student podcasters have proven that young voices can make a powerful impact, reminding listeners of the lasting value of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” as America celebrates 250 years of freedom and opportunity.
