GROUNDBREAKING FOR MULTI-SPORT INDOOR ATHLETIC FACILITY ANNOUNCED FOR JUNE 23, 2022
HAMILTON, GA (JUNE 7, 2022):
WHO: Media, the public, and invited guests of the Harris County School District (HCSD)
WHAT: A groundbreaking ceremony for the new HCSD multi-sport athletic facility
The project is to construct a multi-sport 40,000-square-foot indoor athletic facility for boys’ and girls’ athletics that will be centralized to the existing sports facilities and will include:
- Four locker rooms,
- New weight room,
- 60-yard indoor turf practice field, and
- Additional parking for the facility.
Justin Finney, HCSD assistant superintendent of business services and technology, shared, “Our athletic facilities were created for a 2A school, but we are a 5A school and the pace of growth in our community continues to accelerate quickly. This project will alleviate pressure on the physical education classes that affect all students. Additionally, it will level us up to quite a few of the school districts around us that offer their student athletes these types of facilities.”
This plan was shared with the public in August and was followed by a public information session in December. The project went out for bid in the spring of 2022. Recently, Southern A&E, LLC, of Austell, Ga., was selected as the architect and J&R Construction of Carrollton, Ga., was selected as the construction company for this project. Both companies have successfully completed HCSD facility projects in the past.
Funding for this $12 million project comes from a combination of sources including the 1 mil general obligation bond and ESPLOST (Education Special Local Optional Sales Tax) dollars, both passed by Harris County voters in 2019, as well as monies saved on the construction of the new Harris County Carver Middle School, a project finished about $2.5 million under budget.
The anticipated completion of this project is in June 2023.
WHEN: 5:00 p.m., Thursday, June 23, 2022
WHERE: Behind Harris County High School, which is located at 8281 Georgia Hwy. 116, Hamilton, Ga. The project will be between the softball/baseball complex and Harris County Carver Middle School.
PHOTO/VIDEO OPPORTUNITY: The HCSD Board of Education and construction team guests will have hard hats and gold shovels for the official groundbreaking.
